Nut brown boys standing

on the red dirt bank

of a clear water creek,

now leaning on the breeze,

now falling, sprawling in.

Resting lizard lazy

on a flat black rock

drying in the heat just

to wet it down again.

Playing catfish games

lying on a smooth peeble bed

with a reed reaching up

to bring sun hot air

down to the cool.

Til a cottonmouth sneak

comes skimming the ripples

swimming through the cattails

slipping quiet to the pool.

Time to haul it out boys

and head for home.
